"Inconvenient and awkward hospital appointments"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as a friend),

this a series of hospital appointments which I have helped an elderly neighbour attend from Dunoon to various GGHB depts

Occasion 1 preumably deciding about a possible prostatic ca.

Appointments at Inverclyde Gartnavel IRH then Stobhill for what was presumably a biopsy 10 am to about 6pm almost missing the last boat

Occasion 2 for this time cataract IRH ---ok then 8. 30 am Vale of Leven! ! !

Ocasion 3 recent Gartnavel for what again I presume is a benign nasal polyp 6. 30pm on a wild snowy day

This will result in further visits a preop exam and a day clinic op

I myself have had to stay overnight in a hotel to meet an early morning IRH appointment because of bad weather --the appointment resulting in a cursory exam

WE appear to bottom of the supply chain here and although there are good experiences people unable to negotiate are badly served

Dear Friend

I am sorry to hear about the list of difficult or challenging appointments offered to your elderly neighbour. I know it can be difficult for those live outwith the metropolitan area or for those who dont drive to attend appointments in Glasgow especially if there offered early or late in the day.

I can only advise that you recommend to your friend that he or she alerts their GP to these difficulties. With these in mind, I woudl hope that the GP acts as an enabler to help your neighbour get an appointment which meets their needs. It may be that the GP isnt aware of their patient relying on your good will and availability. Letting them know of the transport challenges might help.

I wish you and your neighbour the best. Your kindness in helping others get to hospital is wonderful. Best wishes Niall Mc Grogan
