"Long wait to be seen for breast pain"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

I've had breast pain since mid-Feb 2015, my doctor has given me tramadol, solpadol, and ibuprofen the latter has helped with the pain.

I asked to be referred to a breast consultant. I've been told today by the receptionist at my GPs that it was an non-urgent referral. I phoned the hospital and spoke to someone at the breast clinic. They confirmed that that letter is a non-urgent referral.

I will be waiting 10 weeks for an appointment, this can't be right. I live in Glasgow. I'm prepared to travel to any hospital that has an earlier appointment.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Karysmac,

First of all, please accept my apologies that you haven't had a response to your post until now. Although all comments received through Patient Opinion are sent to the relevant service on a monthly basis, I still like to make sure that everyone who writes to us gets a response and so I wanted to make sure I acknowledged your post.

I hope that in the time that has gone by you have been seen by the breast clinic and that all is well. If you have any continued concerns, then please feel free to get in touch with me directly, however I thought it might also be useful to provide an update on this service since you wrote to us.

A review of the breast service is being undertaken across Greater Glasgow and Clyde to look at how we can provide this service within the appropriate timescales. As a short-term measure, and in recogntiion that waiting times have been challenging recently, we are running additional clinics to improve waiting times overall.

Again, my email address is lorna.gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk if there is anything further that I can help with.

Best Wishes,

Lorna
