"Horrendous"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

I am sitting in the discharge room after all i can describe as the worse experience i have ever had at an nhs hospital. I was admitted to Terrington ward very unwell with pneumonia. I was put between a dementia patient and a prisoner handcuffed to a bed complete with 2 police officers. The prisoner spent the night asking for medication and swearing and the dementia patient spent all night bring offensive to everybody. I suffer with my nerves and am on long term medication. I asked during the night if i could be moved- it made sense to put dementia next to prisoner but was told nothing could be done . The next morning i had a complete meltdown due to the stress these patients were putting me under. The ward manager said " this is the NHS nowadays" and everyone has a right to a bed but myself as a patient obviously does not have the right to feel safe relaxed and receive the treatment i needed. I also feel it inappropriate to have male police officers all night in a female ward

Thank you for posting your comments after what has been a very difficult time for you. I am sorry that your experience of being a patient was so distressing and anxiety provoking. I will ensure that your comments are shared with the nurses and consultant staff for the ward and we will look at how we can provide a comprehensive service to all without affecting the well-being of other patients in the same area. I am concerned that there were male police officers close to the area in which your bed was situated. I will follow this up with both the ward sister and the Security Management Specialist for the Trust. If you wish to discuss any of these matters further please do contact me either by telephone or email . I hope that you are now feeling better.
