"Examination of my ankle/foot"

About: Guy's Hospital

I agreed to a student to be present at the examination who was nervous and lacking confidence. The Professor did nothing to help the student with this, and the Professor's manner was very self important. The Professor showed irritation with my struggle to rate the pain in my foot. I am in daily pain when working as a dog walker, yet all medical examinations have found nothing wrong in my foot. I was told that it is a mechanical problem and that I could benefit from specially fitted shoes, but I feel that it is unlikely to be anything to do with my shoes. The Professor's treatment of me and the student irritated me and caused me not to ask questions. I left the consultancy with no idea of what "mechanical " meant in relation to my ankle problem and how to treat it. Medical professionals in the N.H.S are supposed to serve the injured tax payers with their expertise. Not to show off in front of patients and nervous students. I have no medical knowledge, but the fact is, there's something wrong in my foot and the professor doesn't know what it is.

I am sorry to read of your experience in the Rheumatology department. Your comments have been shared with the service management team responsible for the department, who will do their best to understand what went wrong on this occasion. However, if you would like the hospital to carry out a more detailed review and offer you a personal explanation and apology, I hope you will contact PALS (patient advice and liaison service) on 020 7188 8801, 020 7188 8803 or at pals@gstt.nhs.uk.
