My mum has dementia and receives care at home. Some of the staff are lovely so I don't like to complain but I think that care services really need to listen to people and be based around what they need.
My mum has dementia and although she has a care plan it doesn't feel like it gets looked at. For a while her care plan said that the carers should give her a meal, make sure that she ate it and help her to shower. Instead it seemed that they often just gave her a cup of tea and had a chat instead. I would come back from work and find that she hadn't eaten all day.
The carers often don't come at the right time and sometimes don't come at all. Sometimes I get a call at work to tell me that there is a problem and that a carer can't make it but sometimes I am not informed and don't know until I get there after work.
The carers sometimes ask her if she has eaten or taken her tablets - she no longer remembers these things and can't do them herself but when asked she often says yes and then goes without her food or tablets. I think that services and carers need the time to really think about the person that they are caring for.
