Admitted to Leigh for day surgery in Leigh in January 2015, should have been for keyhole gall bladder removal. Converted to open cholystectomy. Nursing staff at Leigh very nice helpful and pleasant. Transferred to Wigan to Standish ward at 9pm groggy and in pain with morphine drip in place.Ambulance crew fine. Standish ward staff mainly rude,disrespectful and lacking in compassion. Miserable and unhelpful. I asked if one of the care staff could help me to sit up I was in pain and only needed a little assistance as I was helping myself the best I could,their retort was ,don't pull on me ! Machines left bleeping all night, tables pushed out of reach with water on. Day time drink in the afternoon did not arrive my query met with the reply that they didn't have enough staff to bring the patients a hot drink. Glad to be discharged 2 days later. After 4 days at home felt unwell, advised to go to Orrell ward,waited two and a half hours for a Dr to see me,query maybe skin infection ! Despite clear signs that there was redness tracking from the wound.Very pleasant member of staff band 4 . Admitted and commenced IV antibiotic treatment. No swab taken from wound site. Following day eruption of infected and bloody matter from wound, had have colostomy bag to collect volume this was on for 8 days. Wound swab taken on day 4 not getting much better, feeling very unwell all this time.Consultant who performed operation did not see me once during my stay,every day I had to ask if any Dr was reviewing me. Swab result back after7, days then prescribed correct IV antibiotic. Began to feel better. Some staff OK,did not see the need for all the overhead lights to be turned on at 6am every morning,many patients having disturbed nights, care staff came making bed ignored patients talking to each other with no regard for patient. Communication poor questions asked of staff had to be repeated again, no one ever got back with response to queries. Observed lack of compassion towards patients disregard and rudeness.Chaotic in the morning,fellow patient in pain with suspected clot wrong area scanned had to go back again. Staffing levels seemed to be reasonable, Matron can round every morning walked down the ward did not see them speak to any patients.Compliments to housekeeping and cleaning staff. I have been a qualified nurse for over 30 years and found I observed little to be proud of.Some junior drs fine but overworked. I would very nervous of having to go in as an in patient in future, I felt very little confidence in many of the staff, On reflection I suspect that the infection was possibly introduced by poor practice, If I had been discharged on antibiotics I may not have been. as vulnerable to secondary infection. 12 days in Wigan are not something I would like to repeat.
