"Professional care"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

I have had the unfortunate need to visit the hospital twice in the last 4 weeks, the first time was when my 35 yr old son suffered a brain haemorrhage , the staff in A&E were exceptional, very caring reassuring and explaining everything that was happening and special thanks must go to the member of staff who was on duty, they were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. My son was then transferred to Newcastle Neurological dept. He is now home and doing well The second time was Monday of this week, I was sent there by my GP as I had very high temp, headaches and nausea. A&E was extremely busy with paramedics other patients and staff obviously working under pressure, I was seen within the hour, again by the same member of staff , they recognised me and asked about my son, which I thought was very nice as they must deal with hundreds of patients a week. I had suspected meningitis , this member of staff cared for me the entire time even after their shift had finished , making sure I had a cubicle and pain relief, I cannot thank them enough, they went beyond what was expected of them for my son and myself. I was transferred to Elm ward and again the staff both day and night were excellent. I am now home in my own bed but felt I had to write this before going to sleep. It transpired I didn't have meningitis but pneumonia. Tell this member of staff I promise no more of my family will be coming to see him, but if they do I know they will be in capable hands x

Dear Debbie, I am sorry to hear that you have had such an unfortunate time of late. It must have been an anxious time for you and your family. Thank you so much for taking the time to contact us to share your experience. As you say, the teams deal with hundreds of patients per week, but they greatly appreciate it when their work is acknowledged in this way. Thank you again, I will ensure that the message is conveyed to them. Please can I wish both your son and yourself very speedy and full recoveries for the future. Thank you again for getting in touch. Best wishes Alison Patient Experience
