"Colonoscopy at UCLH department of gastroenterology"

About: University College Hospital

My first feedback was about the amazing staff at the colonoscopy ward. They're the kind of nursing stars which make patients like me feel comfortable and happy. This feedback is about the colonoscopy procedure itself. My appointment was at 1:15 but I was taken in at 3:44. it was quite a wait but it gave me time to observe the nursing staff I mentioned above.. The doctor came and asked me some questions, and I told them I had done colonoscopy before, that a polyp was trapped but not, and failing to remember the word, the doctor said retrieved. I said yes, that was the word. Then they asked me to sign the consent form, and having done that, we walked to the colonoscopy room. The doctor was helpful and they even carried one of my stuff. In the colonoscopy room I met another nursing team. Caring staff again, making me feel comfortable. They seem to happily work as a team. When I lay down, I told them I was having chest pain. The procedure done by the doctor, however, after the probe was inserted in my anus, was excruciatingly painful all throughout that I cried in pain telling them it was very painful. I thought there was something sharp that was ripping my stomach. I kept on saying it was painful, then after some time, they told me they would add more medication. Experiencing the pain, I thought I wasn't sedated, or if I was, then I wasn't sedated well. Properly sedated, colonoscopy should not be that painful, and I am not talking about the air they put in my colon. I appreciated that they tried to make me feel all right. They explained to me something about my tight colon making it difficult to move the probe . Even then, properly sedated, I sholdn't have felt that excruciating pain. Then they told me that there is air in my colon and it would help me if i expel it. I was out from the room at 4:30. Patients of course may have different experiences relative to this procedure. Mine just happened to be very painful. Maybe the doctor should have adjusted the medication the first time I cried I was in pain. But they must have their professional reason why it didn't happen.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We're so pleased you were happy with the care and attention you received from the staff during your admission to University College Hospital, and will feed this back to the team. However, we are very sorry to hear about your recent experience of having a colonoscopy procedure at UCLH - we would be grateful if you could contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) via pals@uclh.nhs.uk or by calling 020 3447 3042 so that we can look into this.
