"Mental illness"

About: Galloway Community Hospital / Rehabilitation Midpark Hospital / Adult Mental Health (inpatient)

(as the patient),

I've visited my local community hospital many times, I've been kept in a secure unit for 8 days and I have spent 4 nights in the hospital after a bad episode.

One thing that strikes me is the complete lack of knowledge or care many out of hours doctors have for Mental health.

Having been diagnosed with a mental disorder, I can understand that not all doctors are specialists but one two occasions I was completely ignored as doctors looked at my self inflicted wounds.

I left upset and my advocacy worker said "you should never leave the hospital feeling worse than when you went in".

The nurses are so understanding, but the doctors in my area really need to read the DSM IV or study mental illness more. Either that or they should become approachable and stop judging people based on a label.

Dear BenjaminWerdna

I was sorry to read your comments about the experience you had when visiting the Galloway Community Hospital. However I would like to say thank you for taking the time to include your positive thoughts relating to the nursing staff working within this service.

NHS Dumfries and Galloway take all concerns seriously and your posting has already been discussed at the Mental Health team meeting this morning.

From the information you gave I was unable to ascertain whether you are referring to Accident & Emergency doctors or the Out of Hours GP service, both of which are based in the same clinical area of the Galloway Community hospital. I will ensure your comments are forwarded to both clinical teams.

If you wish to discuss this issue further please do not hesitate to contact me on 01387 244297: hilary.butterworth1@nhs.net or Michaela Cannon on 01387 272733

I hope you are feeling and keeping much better now

Best wishes

Hilary
