"Emergency c-section. Non-existent breastfeeding..."

The surgical team who delivered my baby last year were fantastic - reassuring, calm and very supportive. I could not have asked for a better c-section experience, even though it was not planned and I was very scared after 10 hours of labour. A significant amount more post-cesarean breastfeeding support is needed, however. We were re-admitted to PRUH's special care baby unit on day 5 due to ineffective breastfeeding. Milk takes a lot longer to come in after c-section, but this was not addressed before I was sent home. So- if you have a c-section delivery, please persist in getting as much feeding support as possible from the hospital's lactation consultant. The hospital's own breastfeeding consultant is absolutely fantastic and has masses of time for mothers. They became available to us when we were re-admitted to the SCBU. There was not enough practical support on the maternity ward, mothers are very much left to their own devices which can be scary and isolating. The midwives were rushed and not readily available for advice during what I feel is the most important part of the birthing experience.
