"My daughter had to go into the Beatson Unit for a Radioactive tablet."

My daughter got her Thyroid out in December and her doctor want to make sure it was all away so she had to get a Radioactive tablet. Had to swallow the tablet and stay in for 2 days. It was good but she was a bit lonely

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Fony,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your daughter’s recent hospital experience and I am glad that this has gone well for her. It is positive to hear that her short stay was good, but I can appreciate how a stay in hospital can be lonely for some patients. The Beatson Cancer Centre has a mix of single, 2 bed and 4 bed rooms, so some patients may be in their own room for their stay; this can be related to the form of treatment that they are receiving. For example, some patients who receive specific forms of radiotherapy are required to remain in isolation for a defined period of time until the levels of radioactivity have reduced.

The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre does however have facilities to help reduce feelings of isolation, including the Friends of the Beatson Centre, which offers a relaxing environment out with the wards. This Centre provides the opportunity to meet and chat with other patients, as well as many facilities designed to help pass the time while in hospital and we know this is an extremely valuable resource, particularly for patients who are in our care for a long time. Unfortunately your daughter's treatment meant that she had to stay in isolation but we do try to support both patients and their families through what we know is a difficult time.
