"9 hours waiting in A&E"

About: Broomfield Hospital

I visited Broomfield Hospital yesterday with my elderly mother, we arrived at A&E at 11.30 and on the board it mentioned a 2 hour wait to be seen, how then can you explain this?, she was finally discharged at 8.20 in the evening, that meant that she had been sitting in a wheel chair for over 9 hours as we had visited the fracture clinic before arriving at A&E, it was not only us we were told that there were 97 patients in A&E at that time, there were no beds available for some patients who were sitting around waiting for one to become available, and they also complained and asked if they could be discharged as sitting in a hospital wheelchair all day whilst feeling ill is not an ideal situation, one patient told us that they had called 999 for an ambulance and then was called 15 minutes later and asked could they make it in themselves as there were no ambulances available, all of the ambulances were waiting at the hospital with patients to book them in, and were all round the corridors, there were no side rooms available for half of the time we were there and we were asked to leave one at one point as an elderly lady of 100 who had also been sitting in the waiting room for many hours needed stitches, what ever is this hospital coming to, one Doctor was overheard saying that the ideal situation would have been to close Broomfield hospital saying there is just no room here go to the next Hospital, why should patients arriving at the A&E department be expected to stand or sit on the floor as they were doing yesterday, it was like a 3rd World country, the NHS should be ashamed, the staff were exceptional, why should they be expected to take all the abuse thrown at them, I didn't see any managers around, they were probably happy sitting in their comfortable chairs in their comfortable offices whilst the patients were crammed into this one room with no chairs and not able to manoeuvre wheelchairs about anywhere, this hospital yesterday was disgusting!

Thank you for the feedback it is appreciated. Like most NHS Trusts we are experiencing higher numbers of patients attending our A&E Department than we would usually expect. We acknowledge the experience our patients are having in these busy periods is not what we would like to deliver. We are working to rectify this and apologise for the delays your mother and other patients experienced.
