"Lost my personal data!"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital

I was referred to Leigh Infirmary for sleep apnoea issues, this has now been moved to Blackpool as I needed to see an ENT specialist. I dropped off results from an overnight sleep test which that I collected by hand from Leigh and handed them over to the ENT Dept. nurse who said that this would be handed over to the consultant's secretary. I have spoken to the slightly unhelpful secretary who said that the information is not in that dept. I have left a message with the Respiratory Dept. and I am waiting for them to get back to me within 24 hours! The status is: I will have to have a redo a test that I have already had 5 minths ago, there will be results from this test that will be similar, if not exact, to the ones I handed over to the ENT Dept., there is personal data with my name etc. on it lost in the hospital somewhere. Will someone please take responsibility for this issue and find it then apply common sense so that I do not have to undergo the same test again?

Hi Andy

Thank you so much for sharing your story. We are always working to improve the services we offer to our patients and this starts with listening to what your experience of care has been like to understand what we do well and what we could do differently.

Your story highlights so many areas for us to learn from as an organisation. I was disappointed to read that your results had been lost this is not the standard we would expect. I know that there is very little that can be done now to change your personal experience, however I will pass your comments on to the medical records manager for the department so they can improve and develop their service moving forward. Your story should be a reminder to all staff there of the difference they can make to someone who has been transferred across from another service and will hopefully ensure that no other patients have the same experience.

I’d be grateful if you could contact a member of my team directly on 01253 955588 so that we can get further details about what happened and ensure we learn from this incident. I do assure you this will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. Or if you would like to share your experience in confidence with an independent organisation please contact Healthwatch Blackpool on 0300 323 2100.

Thank you once again for leaving feedback and taking the time to comment on what happened with your results.

Yours faithfully

Eleanor Walsh
