"My Mum's care in ward 79"

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital

My Mum was in ward 79 for 2 & 1/2 weeks from early January. My Dad & I were really pleased with the very high quality care she received during her stay...All members of staff, no matter what their occupation/profession were friendly, welcoming, very helpful- nothing was too much trouble. Staff were so kind & caring with my Mum & always attentive. Unfortunately she did contract an infection but made a full recovery. Even when we had to wait a few minutes for a bell to be answered, it was due to other patients receiving attention - the staff were very apologetic. Communication was excellent - when we telephoned in & also when we were visiting. - staff always available for discussion regarding my Mum's progress. I was always confident that when we left her in the evenings, she was receiving a very high standard of care & expertise.. We did inform staff of our opinion & gave our heartfelt thanks on my Mum's discharge. I am a Physio (elsewhere), & so am aware of hospital care standards. One small issue was that my Mum is gluten intolerant, - there was a gluten free menu with choices for selection, but these choices never changed & so she was fed up of the food! Another larger issue was the lack of provision of seamless care upon discharge but am dealing with this via another route. Mum came in via the Emergency Dept & the staff there too, were great, as were they on the admissions ward. She had to wait 7 hours for a bed - but that was to be expected. The carpark charges are very steep though!
