"Breast Reconstruction...It's your body, not theirs"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital

My breast reconstruction has not yet been done due to being let down by the last two surgeons I've seen. My current plastic surgeon is not happy that I will say what is done with my own body and I choose the procedure I wish to have, as I did 13 years ago. Very long story. He does perform this operation on women immediately after mastectomy, with the same BMI as myself, but doesn't want to do it on me. He hasn't answered why that is, just as he hasn't answered many questions. I am not treat as a human being suffering with depression and a deformed breast after cancer. I am a size dd and the surgeons I have seen want me to be smaller. No, this is my body and all I want is to be me, my size. As for making a complaint, well don't bother. The surgeons etc don't want to reply as they don't like complaints and possibly feel insulted. Well we do too. You have to keep calling the complaints to find out what's happening, because they don't keep you updated either. And they call it the caring profession. Joke!

I am very sorry to hear about the problems that you are encountering with regard to your breast surgery and that you feel let down by the last two surgeons. I have noted your comments about making complaints and wish to assure you that the Trust does take all complaints very seriously and we have a duty to respond to complaints in a timely way and that in doing so, we would seek the comments from the clinicians involved in your care.

If you do wish to raise a formal complaint or wish to discuss your ongoing concerns, please could you contact one of our Patient Partnership Officers on telephone number 0114 271 2400 or by email at PST@sth.nhs.uk and one of the team will be pleased to assist you.

Kind regards.

Further to my earlier email and following consultation with the Surgical Services, the services have commented that surgery can be offered in appropriate circumstances when clinically relevant. Each patient is an individual and needs to be assessed appropriately. I hope that this clarification is helpful to you, other users and potential users of our services. Kind regards.
