"I used to rate New Cross but no more"

About: New Cross Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My mother suffers from dementia and has been in a care home since Feb 2009. In September 2009 she had a fall and was sent by ambulance to New Cross A&E. She was x-rayed and found to have a broken hip, she was given morphine and moved to ward D6 at 1 pm. At 5.30pm she was seen by an orthopaedic doctor and the family were told she would need an operation. This was carried out the next day and the day after that we were told she would need physio and assessment as to her ability to move around by herself possibly with walking aids.

At the end of that week the care home she was with was asked if they would take her back that day, the duty carer who knows mother very well said he thought it was too early. Mother was returned to the care home the next Monday. She had 20 minutes of physio and I feel no real assessment of her condition or ability to move around. In my opinion the hospital staff to have virtually no duty of care and I believe that as far as they were concerned they wanted her out and the bed made vacant.

Her care home has been excellent in their care and responsibility unlike New Cross who I feel seems to evaluate patients by their age. My mother at 88 years of age I thought appeared to them to be a burden. I used to rate New Cross as a benefit to people of Wolverhampton, but I don’t feel this way no more.
