"My recent stay on ward A4 / A6"

About: Warrington Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I recently had a planned anterior resection of colon operation. My surgeon was Mr Barry Taylor.

My personal experience during this time is extremely positive. Everyone was very caring and made me feel like an individual before and after surgery and on the ward for the following five days. Prior to the operation I did become emotional and the staff were able to reassure me that I was in safe hands. I am recovering well and would like to express my grateful thanks to Mr Taylor and his team and the ward staff for their care during my stay in hospital.

There were however some observations on the care of a more vulnerable patient on my ward, and I itemise these below:

*. A small number of the carers (1 or 2) did not seem to have the empathy and caring when dealing with her. On one occasion during the night I heard from behind her curtain a carer shouting at the lady insisting that she move her feet; telling her that she needed to move to one part of the bed or another. In response the lady seemed to be distressed asking the carer not to touch her as she was hurting her. The carer then reported to one of the nursing staff that this lady was not listening to her.

*. On another occasion, the same elderly lady was asking to be taken out of her bed. She was told this was not possible she was not well enough to leave her bed. At this point I did suggest that the lady wanted to eat her meal from her chair and the carers checked with the nursing staff and the old lady was then taken to her chair in order to eat her meal.

I would like to reiterate that my own experience was good and I cannot fault at all.

Hi. Thank you so much for your very kind comments about your recent stay which we have passed on to staff straight away.

However, we would like to hear more about the observations you had of the care provided on the ward. Would you please email your contact details to us via patient.experienceteam@whh.nhs.uk so we can contact you.

Hope you are soon feeling much better.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Glad your personal experience was so positive. We'll look into the issues raised regarding the other patient - care and empathy is vital for all patients however difficult their care may be at particular times.
