"Rheumatology admin"

About: Worthing Hospital

I needed to speak with a member of the Rheumatology team today so called the Hospital switchboard and asked to be put through (the switchboard operator was polite and friendly) The lady who answered then was very rude and curt - she said the Rheumatology nurse wasnt there and when I asked if any of the consultants were available she replied that no one was there "..... It's called Half Term" . I was shocked at her attitude as I have always been very impressed with the medical team in Rheumatology - they take great care to be proactive, caring and communicate really well at all times - there has always been someone to answer an urgent query which is helpful when having an acute inflammatory arthritis flare. I asked to leave a message for the Rheumatology nurse and was told I could but she wouldn't get it till Monday which I said was fine and explained that my new Medication had just arrived and I needed help injecting it. She replied curtly "don't you inject it yourself?" I didn't feel this was appropriate as it is not for the administrative staff to comment on a medical issue. I do not wish my identity to be disclosed as I am under the care of the Rheumatology team on an ongoing basis, however I do feel this lady could benefit from some training. Many thanks

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. We apologise that you were spoken to in such a curt way, as you describe. We have forwarded your post to the manager for the Rheumatology Department, so that they can look into your comments. However, without your identity, it may be difficult to investigate. If you change your mind about disclosing your details, please contact us on palsworthing@wsht.nhs.uk, and please be assured that if you were to do so, this would be treated with discretion and would have no impact on your ongoing care.
