"Nursing care of my husband was terrible at Morriston Hospital"

About: Morriston Hospital / Cardiology

(as a relative),

My husband was in Morriston recently for cardiac surgery, what a disappointment with the standard of nursing care and cleanliness of the high dependency cardiac ward.

The first day they I could visit after the operation my husband was sitting in a hospital gown, I had told the staff he had a problem and that if he asked to go to the toilet he needed to go straight away. This did not happen as the staff were talking and he had an accident. The one thing he was scared of was loosing his dignity and straight away this happened. There was blood all down his arm and on the floor because the venflon had come out, this was still there when I left. There was a dirty towel and gloves on the bed. I spent ages going to the other ward to retrieve his pyjamas, getting him dressed, shaved and helping him clean his teeth. I had brought some fruit for him which I had to help him eat as his had was so swollen that he could not manage himself. The dinner came round and he said that he did not want any, they would have just gone and left him, but, I asked for a dinner and helped my husband eat it. I am an ex nurse and could not believe the lack of basic care.

This continued the next day when again he asked to go to the toilet, he was told im a minute and I had to interrupt the staff talking and insist that they help him, which they then did but if I had not been there I would have had to throw away another pair of pyjamas. The first pair was given to me to take home and they had not even been rinsed out so I had to through them away.

What is the point of having a fantastic surgeon then have the very great change of a slow recovery and infection on the ward?
