""Pick it up yourself""

About: Raigmore Hospital / Clinical haematology Raigmore Hospital / General Medicine

(as a friend),

My 83 year old friend was dying of a rare blood disease, was very weak and could not stand unaided. His blanket fell onto the floor so he asked the nurse for help. She, a teenager, shot back "Pick it up yourself" He had to wait over an hour before another nurse picked it up for him. He always felt the cold badly, even more so when he became ill; a common symptom. He died three days later.

I have taken up a new post as Head of Public Relations and together with our Board Director of Nursing, we have been reviewing all postings on Patient Opinion.

NHS Highland has only recently formally signed up to Patient Opinion. This means we now get an automatic alert when a new story is posted and we will make sure we respond in a timely manner. At the time this story was posted we did not access this website.

I was really really sorry to see this feedback. NHS Highland has embarked on a wide range of work to improve our customer care. Feedback and active involvement of patients, carers and the wider public is vital for us to improve. We know that basic things like manners and attitude are very important.

Regards
