"Appalling A&E service"

About: St Richard's Hospital

My 84 year old auntie was taken in yesterday with a broken hip. Upon arrival she was left to wait for a space infront of automatic doors blowing cold air after a ridiculous wait time she was taken inside the A&E ward only to be put in the corridor and left. When she was finally put in a cubicle all staff who attended were lovely themselves but getting one was like gold dust. My auntie needed to be moved up the bed professionally due to her hip injury and was asked this but no one bothered to move her until she changed beds. When she needed the toilet the nurse came and put a bed pan in, left to give her some privacy and disappeared. It took for us to find her and tell her she was finished and needed attending. What if my auntie had been in the hospital on her own? God knows how long she would have been left. She was finally taken to the A&E side ward (not her final destination as she has to be moved to a real ward again) at 10pm. She injured herself at 3 in the afternoon and it took the staff 7 hours to place an 84 year old woman in a proper bed and get her diagnosed and comfortable. Terrible service with no sense of urgency from a supposed 'emergency' department. Ps. Please do not get me wrong this is no dig at the staff. They were all lovely when they were able to actually get to you.

Thank you for this feedback. It must have been distressing for your auntie and yourself to have experienced such a long delay before being made comfortable, and we are very sorry to hear this. We have forwarded your post to the Matron in A&E; however, without details of your auntie's identity, it will not be easy to investigate fully. If you would like us to do this, please get in touch via our PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) office at palschichester@wsht.nhs.uk.
