"Generally good. Improvements needed in some areas."

About: Manor Hospital

One of the overall impressions I formed at the hospital during my stay is that mentally disturbed patients should be segregated from normal mainstream patients as they can cause alot of distress to other patients. I feel sorry for them but I think they need specialist supervision and care away from other patients. The nursing staff were generaly very good especially in the daytime. At night I got the impression that the agency staff sometimes couldn't care less. The wards need a lick of paint to brighten them up a bit and perhaps a few artificial flowers placed here and there. I thought it was also a shame that there are no longer any day rooms where patients could get a change of scenery and relax. The food wasn't too bad overall but the standard needs to be raised a bit. I heard some patients say they would have liked a bacon sandwich for breakfast but no bacon or sausage was on offer at breakfast. A friend of mine who worked at the hospital years ago said that bacon and sausage were on the menu when she was there. Why has it been stopped ? I could tell that the nurses were under a lot of pressure at times and most of them coped admirably. They definately need more staff.

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to post a comment. There are a cohort of adults within the ward areas who have some element of cognitive impairment which is often exacerbated by they acute condition, whilst we appreciate that their behaviours may have an impact on other patients it would be unfair to ‘segregate’ them as they also have a right to be treated with dignity and respect. The Trust acknowledges the fact that the unfamiliar hospital environment and their physical health does have an impact on them and colleagues will endeavour to minimise this as best as possible. Colleagues are also undertaking additional training to be able to meet these specific needs, we also have a team of Well-being Apprentices, whose role it is to undertake specialist supervision. Any concerns that are identified with the skills and competence of any agency staff is reported to the nursing agency by the Trust. This is to ensure that the standards of care delivered within our wards are maintained and that this meets our expectations. Having spoken to our Estates and Facilities department, I have been advised that we are trying to develop the ward environment further, this however, cannot be done until our capacity is such that we are able to temporarily close a ward, please be ensured that this is a priority for us. Toast, cereal & ready break is available and offered on all wards at breakfast, for those patients identified as needing a higher protein breakfast we offer scrambled or boiled egg & baked beans. In some instances patients may be given further choice. If you would like to speak to somebody further about the care that you have received at the Trust, please contact our Patient Relations team via 01922 656463 or email patientrelations@walsallhealthcare.nhs.uk
