"I have got my life back again following two cataract operations"

Having arrived at 12 midday at the QMC I was ushered through to a room where I had my blood pressure taken and asked a few questions by a nurse. I then had to wait about 5 minutes when I went into another room there I was told exactly what was going to happen.

Then some drops were inserted into my eye after having checked which eye needed treatment. Then I was asked if I had any concerns. I then sat down in the other room until I was called by someone who carefully examined my eye and marked the offending eye with an arrow. Again I sat in the waiting area. During this time several drops were inserted into my eye to localise the area.

I was then seen by the consultant who again examined and explained the procedure. After about three and a half hours I was taken to the theatre and seen by the anaesthetist who inserted a local injection into my right eye. This was the most painful experience. Then I went to theatre where I was positioned on the table and the operation started. During which time the procedure was explained again.

Following this I was taken to another room and given a cup of tea and biscuits and had my blood pressure checked. An hour later I was again seen by the consultant who examined the eye again and asked how I was to get home.

The worst part of the process was the long wait but I realise the drops had to have time to work. The process in the anaesthetic room and when post operated the consultant stuck my eyelid down which had to stay for 24 hours. Overall a tremendous result. I only need glasses for reading; I have got my life back again following two cataract operations.
