"patients don't have access to the same things as patients in other hospitals"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My mum is in the rehabilitation ward and has issues with her memory. Unlike in the Victoria hospital in Kirkcaldy there is no paper round at all in this ward and nowhere that visitors can buy a paper in the hospital.

This ward is about giving people tools to help re-orientate them and give them skills for daily life. it seems unfair that there is no access on a daily basis to something with a date on it and current news. The only television is in the day room however there are no emergency buzzers in this room which means that patients aren't able to access this room. There are also lots of pictures waiting to be put up on the walls in this room as well which have been sitting now for a couple of weeks which seems a shame.

The nursing care is good but it seems unfair that patients don't have access to the same things as patients in other hospitals. It also seems unfortunate that the space chosen for the ward where people may spend a fairly lengthy time is the lowest floor of the hospital with no views.

This shows a lack of foresight given that the majority of the space seems to be given over to clinics and offices.

Dear Healthservice user 99

Thank you for taking the time to post. I am pleased to say that we are looking at getting the issue of the newspapers sorted quickly as we can see that this is something that matters to patients and their families. You are right to be critical of our lack of foresight and I am sorry that you found it necessary to bring this to our attention. We are arranging for some one to ask the patients in our rehab wards if they would like a newspaper and this morning were exploring the options for having this in place all the time. I have passed your comments on about the delay in getting the pictures hung and hope that this too can be resolved quickly. I am happy to discuss this directly or to let you know the outcome via a further posting.

In the meantime, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Regards

Louise Ewing

That is helpful however you have not addressed the lack of emergency buzzers in the day room which means there is no access to the only television for patients on wards. Patients in single rooms have televisions. Again a television on the word was something that was available in Kirkcaldy and watching television is part of what is daily routine in my mum's life. There is no alternative available other than to consider bringing in technology but my mum would find it almost impossible to use this.

Hello again Some good news...today we started a trolley service in Queen Margaret Hospital which provides newspapers and a range of other items for sale, which was in response to feedback we got from you and another person - thanks! I had hoped to post some pictures to show you; however I am having a technical difficulty in doing so, but watch this space... I know we are still to get back to you about the other issues you raised but hopefully you will see that we are listening and keen to make improvemets on the back of feedback we receive. Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us these things. I will get back to you on the other issues when I have something to share. Regards LouiseThe new trolley service at Queen Margaret Hospital
