"Orthopeadic Clinic - Arthritus Care"

About: Queen Elizabeth I I Hospital (Welwyn Garden City)

I visited the clinic in April 2014 and the visit is still causing me upset. This was not my first visit to the clinic and until this appointment I had always been treated very well by the doctors and nurses. I had not met this doctor before so I understand why he went through all my medication and illnesses but was surprised by his manner and some of his remarks He also told me that I ran a high risk of having my legs amputated if I had knee replacement due to the medication I was on. This frightened me rather as this had never been mentioned before by the consultant. When I had the injections in my knees I was told by my consultant (this can be confirmed by my partner who was with me at the time) that I would not be able to have knee replacement for at least 10 months if I had the injections, which I accepted. This new doctor called me a liar and said the consultant would never have said that to me. This upset me greatly. The doctor then told me to go away and lose 2 stone in weight and then go back to my GP to be re-referred in a years’ time. (I had been on steroids which I feel accounted for my weight) I did mention that I had just recently joined a slimming club. It was at this time a nurse interrupted and told the doctor that I didn’t need to be referred as could have an appointment in one years’ time. I then left the clinic in tears. The nurse did come after me and apologise for the doctors behaviour. After all this time I am very still traumatised by this.

Although it’s almost a year since your appointment, we are very sorry that you left your appointment feeling so upset. We would never want one of our patients to feel like this – and we would welcome the chance to investigate what happened. If you would like to talk to us some more, please email us at generalenquiries.en-tr@nhs.net.
