"After being informed by ward 37 that my mother had..."

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

After being informed by ward 37 that my mother had only hours left my brothers and myself went straight to the hospital along with our partners. The nurses had pulled the side curtains across and left the end in full view. All of the other patients in the bay must have known what was happening along with their visitors. One patient actually stood at the end of my mothers bed asking what all the noise was. We asked for a side room so that we all could have some dignity but was told there wasnt one available, this was at 5.30pm and it wasnt until 9.30 that we had our request granted. My mother had 3 sons but we were told that only one male could stay after 9.30pm due to the ward being female. My mother died two days later and during that time not one of the staff showed any care at all. When we informed the staff that her monitor was bleeping we were told that they were too busy to come into the room to see what was wrong. The monitor's bleep went off quite a few times and we were told by one member of staff that it was faulty. During the time my mother was in the hospital my brother had a phone call from the hospital (fearing the worst news) to be asked who was funding my mother. My mother died early Thursday morning and I am writing this mid day on Monday and we still have to keep ringing up to see when we can get the death certificate so that we can start to arrange things. Please dont think that the nurses are all angels at this place because it is simply not true or nothing like.

Dear Reviewer We are truly sorry to hear of your loss and we are especially sorry that it sounds like we didn't make her sad passing any easier for you and your family. This is very regretable. You, your family and your mother absolutely should have had privacy. We would very much like to investigate this futher. If you could email communications@uhl-tr.nhs.uk outlining your concerns, along with your mother's name and date of birth, we'll find out what happened and at least try to prevent this happening again. Our thoughts are with you and your family. Sincerely Communications Team Leicester's Hospitals
