About: Cumberland Infirmary

The care my partner received today can only be described as a joke! 9 hours in a & e, no food or water. The nurses were terrible and not really bothered about the patient, who had been administered morphine not that any of the nurses seem to care about that they almost seemed de moralised and complained about the 'system' No beds available (apparently) surely this is a huge huge management issue, from the nurses upwards this hospital needs a kick up the backside. Very poor

I am sorry to hear of the experience that you describe, this is not our usual standard. I must apologize unreservedly for the lack of refreshments; I have drawn this to the attention of senior staff who will give an urgent reminder of this requirement to the team. You may be aware from the media, of the unprecedented levels of pressure experienced by all NHS services nationally this winter. Unfortunately this has a knock on effect on A&E services and bed availability within all of our hospitals, I am sorry that your partner’s need for care has been caught up in the middle of this. I know that this national problem does not lessen the distress of your situation, and offer this as an explanation not an excuse. Please be assured that teams and managers are working tirelessly to try to resolve issues on a daily basis and to learn from feedback such as this. Thank you again for contacting us.
