"Medicine out of date"

About: Poole General Hospital

My son went to A&E this afternoon with his dad after he shut the door on his finger and broke his fingertip and need to get a finger nail removed. He is only 3 years old. Returned to my place with some antibiotics - due date January 2015. I know today is only the 1st February but he will need to take that for nearly a week and I thought medicines should never been given out or taken when out of date. On the other hand I used the services when i was living in poole and it was great.

Thank you for providing us with your feedback. We are very sorry to hear about the issue regarding the expiry date on the antibiotics. Please be reassured that the antibiotics your son would have been prescribed would have been safe to take. However, we are very grateful to you for highlighting this to us, and have subsequently taken the opportunity to review all stocks in the department, and remind all our A&E staff that they must check that medication will remain in date throughout a course of treatment.
