"I was surprised and amazed"

About: Barnsley Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

My experience at BDGH was an unexpected three day stay. I was going on a continental holiday within four days I had had a second bout of stomach pain and sickness, therefore, I felt it necessary to see my GP before going. Whilst at the surgery a blood sample was taken. That evening a telephone call from BDGH told me the test results were abnormal and I must immediately go to the hospital. On my arrival I saw a doctor, was directed to a ward where a nurse and bed awaited me. A doctor then carried out further tests. The next morning I saw the consultant and his team. The following morning an ultra sound soon showed the diagnosed pancreatitis to be due to multiple stones in the gall bladder. Later that day I went home. Within a week I returned to the hospital for a follow up appointment. I now have a six to eight week wait to see the surgeon who deals with the gall bladder. What really did surprise and amaze me however was the urgency given to the dealing of the problem. Mine was only a short stay in the hospital but I did find both day and night staff to be friendly, kind, helpful and understanding towards their patients. A clean, pleasant, single sex room or only four beds was greatly appreciated. The public areas I used were also clean and inviting. The downside as the quality of food served and the insufficient car parking spaces. I can only compliment both my own GP and the hospital with their prompt response in dealing with my problem.
