"My grandma's poor experience of nursing in Burton"

About: Queen's Hospital, Burton Upon Trent / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My grandma has just been admitted to hospital at 3.00 am with suspected fluid on her lungs in a terrible state.

Firstly, the paramedic said to my mother 'you should have contacted us sooner' - not a particularly kind or helpful remark for anybody given the circumstances.

Secondly, whilst in a bed in casualty my grandma was seen by a very efficient consultant yet treated by an extremely rude and uncaring nurse. When she came to do some basic obs she did not speak to my grandma or any family members except to say that we needed to reduce the number of people around the bed (at this stage we had been told there was little chance of her leaving hospital).

The point is that it is a basic human right to be spoken to whilst having a thermometer shoved in your ear. I appreciate that nurses work long, hard shifts but if you cannot even summon up the enthusiasm to be nice to a dying lady or her traumatised family then it may be best to consider that you are in the wrong career and perhaps the NHS should do more to weed out these nurses and replace them with people who genuinely care.
