"Blood Test"

About: Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Florence Nightingale Community Hospital / Clinical haematology

(as a relative),

Transported Mother to hospital (Derby Community ) for blood test with form from GP.

Was told test was not possible because Mother had not fasted.

The GP did not say to fast before the test. I understand he was busy and it may just have slipped his mind.

More annoyingly the form itself does not inform the patient to fast. This should be in large easily visible letters across the form.

Due to some technical difficulties, we apologise for the delay in being able to respond to this review.

Many thanks for your comments regarding fasting blood tests. Unfortunately, without having the opportunity to see the actual blood test form that your mother was handed by her GP, it is difficult to ascertain if this was a specific hospital devised form or a local form developed by the GP practice(s).

However, as there are also many different types of blood tests, it is usually considered the responsibility of the referring clinician to explain to the patient whether there are any specific instructions they need to adhere to, such as the need to fast, prior to having the test carried out and also decide if this needs to be included in writing somewhere on the form.

However, we will certainly share your comments with the appropriate staff within our hospital so they can consider your suggestion when devising our blood test request forms and once again may we take the opportunity to thank you for taking the time to provide us with this valuable feedback.

Kind regards
