I was sent to the John Radcliffe eye clinic by Stoke Mandeville for retinal detachment surgery as the procedure was urgent and Oxford was the earliest date for the procedure, three days from diagnosis. I arrived early in the morning expecting to have an operation as arranged by Stoke Mandeville, but the hospital had no record om me and the surgeon who was doing the operation was in Northampton that day. The earliest Oxford could carry out the operation was 3-4 weeks time which was unnaceptable. I managed to get seen promptly by Moorfields and surgery was carried out the same day I went for a check up and to be seen by their specialists. I wish I had known this and would have gone straight to Moorfields and by-passed Oxford completely! The day after I was at Moorfields I called Oxford eye clinic to inform them I had been operated on and to cancel any appointments they may have made for me. After Christmas I received lots of literature about preparing from my operation and that I had an appointment with the eye clinic in the new Year and a date a few days later for surgery. I called them again to let them know my change in situation. Today the eye clinic called me to confirm that I would be attending the hospital tomorrow for surgery!! This hospital seems to have no organization of it's admin department and must waste so many appointments. It maybe a reason why it takes so long to get an appontment in the first place. I cannot comment on the quality of surgery I recieved as it was done elsewhere, just the helpfulness of the staff, the general attitude of the specialists and friendliness of everyone there which was bad. Thinking back I am actually glad the operation was cancelled as I wouldn't feel confident having surgery at this hospital. My advice would be to go to Moorfields which is a centre of excellence, or anywhere else and give the John Radcliffe a miss!!
"Poorly organized"
