"Physiotherapy is not for elderly or frail patients?"

About: Physiotherapy Department -

(as the patient),

I recently went for my first physiotherapy appointment with the NHS, at Abbey Road Clinic Barrow in Furness, and was greatly disappointed. Although physiotherapist was friendly, he didn't listen well. Both my husband and I were suprised how rough he was when testing my muscle strength. Although I was in pain at the time, I didn't realize until the next day how much he had hurt my existing hip condition. At the end, the recommended exercises were so rushed that neither I nor my husband were sure what ones I should do. Although I'm sure this man is a great sports therapist, I fear for older and more frail paitents (like myself) who get sent to him. By not listening to his patient and not responding with appropriate care, he's done more harm than good.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at your first physiotherapist appointment at Abbey Road Clinic. I am very sorry to read that the appointment was unsatisfactory and caused you additional pain.

We would always encourage you to raise your concerns with the physiotherapy team directly and you can of course ask to see a different physiotherapist if you would prefer.

In the meantime, we have passed on your comments to the Abbey Road Clinic but if you would like to discuss your concerns in more detail, please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0300 123 9006 or NHS Cumbria’s Complaints Team on 01539 797861.
