During my niece's stay in HRI, she was taken down for an operation, so her mum and I sat outside the High Dependency Unit and not one NHS staff member (nurses, doctors, consultants, porters etc) used the hand cleaning gel when entering or leaving the ward.
The visitors for the unit all used the gel.
Also no staff used the gel on the ward itself. They promote infection control and good hygeine etc but they don't practice it themselves. This is why diseases and MRSA infections are spread, not through visitors but through hospitals' own staff.
