"Thoroughly dispiriting"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

Went in with severely swollen tongue, ? Allergic reaction. Saw the triage nurse within minutes and a passing Dr who prescribed steroids but then had to sit in waiting room for 2 1/2 hours with no info as to what would happen next. Saw lots of others having similar experiences inc a young dad next to us with a toddler who didn't even see anyone during that time, toddler had high fever and skin rash.

Atmosphere terrible, uncomfortable and aware staff were severely overworked.

Eventually saw earlier doctor for 5 mins, got no real reassurance and sent home with steroids and stomach stuff to counteract any side effects but reading the leaflet he should have asked me far more about what else I was taking and explained about poss side effects since for both the side effects included swollen mouth and tongue, ie what I arrived with.

Individuals were doing their best but the system is really terrible. People being sick in bowls in waiting area and no staff even reacting, sharing space with stroppy prisoner and guards and lots of sick children not being attended to.

Thoroughly dispiriting to see what looks like the collapse of our amazing NHS.

Dear fed up patient

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the A&E team, I am sorry that on the day you attended we were not able to meet your expectations. The A&E department has seen exceptional demand for our services and we have been striving to maintain flow through the department. Whilst unable to discuss individual cases I would like to reassure you that all patients presenting are seen by the triage nurse and an initial assessment made of the patients’ needs.

If you would like me to investigate the concerns you raised regarding your medical care please contact Sharon Kidd, Patient Experience and PALS Manager, on sharon.kidd3@nhs.net or 07799 868206 with your personal details.

Regards

Karen Hansord
