"Orthopaedic Outpatients and Xray"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital

I attended an Orthopaedic Outpatient Appointment on Christmas Eve and was very impressed with the staff and the general organisation. There appeared to have been a minor blip for some other orthopaedic patients who had not been told of a change of location for their appointments but all the staff, both receptionists and nursing staff made the effort to apologise for the confusion and to sympathise with the patients concerned. I was sent for some xrays before my appointment and again was very impressed with how I and the other patients were spoken to and dealt with. Both departments were busy, with numerous patients, but there was an atmosphere of "busy calmness" and despite appearing to be busy, all the staff had time for their patients, especially for those who through age or disability could not walk very fast. In orthopaedic outpatients someone had even come up with the simple, cost effective and useful idea of providing free suduko puzzles on clipboards for patients to while away any waiting time. What a simple but great idea! My consultation was fine and I found the Consultant very approachable. He discussed the treatment options with me, which I also found logical, a repeat ultrasound scan, followed by a steroid injection if symptoms hadn't improved, followed by surgery if the steroid injection was ineffective. I was even told how to find the way out. Somebody had even been out and put scarves and headgear on the ornamental owls in the courtyard which made me chuckle. All in all, an excellent experience which I really could not fault at all. Thank you.

Dear Jenny

Thank you for sharing your Christmas Eve experience of our Orthopaedic outpatient and X-Ray departments, it is always so uplifting to the staff to receive such praise from the patients they attend and I will be sure to pass on your comments to them.

Thank you for noting the calm and professional manner in which they work and I like you thought the idea of Sudoku puzzles was a very nice, simple gesture.

I am pleased to hear that you found the consultant to be approachable and informative in the way he explained things to you.

Our owls bring a smile to many faces and I am glad that you liked them, I know they are often talked about each year when the get dressed up on festive occasions.

I hope you soon find relief from the joint pains you are having and wish you well for the New Year.

Regards

Sue Mellor
