About: North Tyneside General Hospital

I took my son recently to a&e after him complaining of ear pain for 2 days knowing his history with his ears and his screams because of pain i felt they needed looking at you might not think ear ache is serious but for a 6 year old with history of operations to his ears youd know other wise we arrived at 11pm told there was a wait of up to 3 hours so we waited 3 hours passed and the peads doctor had seen 5 children before him and then left i asked the receptionist when we would be seen to be told 10 people were in front of us not one of them was a child all adults with drunken injuries sat vomiting in the waiting room (self inflicted) so my child now sat there almost 4 hours screaming in pain had to wait well no he deserved better care and attention so i let at 3am having to cradle him till he slept as he was in absolute agony and what happend next his ear burst yes burst both ears now infected thanks to the lack of support and care from a place that is supposed to look after you because a load of drunks had arrived all it wpuld have taken was a doc to take a look prescribe antibiotics and drain a bit fluid but no clearly drunks come before the health and well being of a child luckily i know my childs needs and rushed him straight over to doctors the next morning and what to they do give him the care he needs so thanks a bunch and also the hygiene on a weekend knowing children spend time in the department vomit all iver the floor (from drunks) covered with bed pads and a wet floor sign i passed at least 6 when there just left all over and the toilets covered in faeces disgusting place i hope i never have to return again

Dear Ashleigh, Many thanks for taking the time to share your review with us. I am really sorry that we failed to give your son the care you expected for him during a recent visit to emergency care. We know that all A+E departments are under extreme pressure at the minute up and down the country, and so I am also sorry that this resulted in your boy waiting longer to be seen than we'd want. I can appreciate how distressing this was for you given the pain he was in with his ears. Our staff will be doing their absolute best to ensure that everyone is seen as efficiently and safely as possible - this will involve prioritising patients according to the seriousness of their medical condition. We accept that as you wait, it is not always possible to understand why someone is being prioritised and seen ahead of you. It would be really helpful to have a few more details from you so that we can discover exactly what happened that evening. Please get in tough with me via email : annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk Regardless of how busy, the poor level of cleanliness you describe in the department that evening is of great concern to me, as it falls way below the usual high standards we would expect for all wards and departments in our hospitals. Again it would be really helpful to have more details about when you attended the department with your son so that we can investigate this a little further. I hope your wee boy is feeling a lot better now and able to enjoy the rest of the Christmas holidays. With thanks again for bringing this to our attention, Annie
