"Mixed experiences"

About: Callington Road Hospital

I've been an inpatient at Callington Road Hospital twice. On the first experience I was left to my own devices, in a room, terrified, having a psychotic episode, with very little about my situation being explained to me by doctors or nurses. I needed to be reassured that I was safe, that it was a hospital, that staff knew what they were doing and that all would be well. On the second visit I had access to activities and OT and was communicated with much better. As a result of this experience I recovered from my psychotic episode (over one year ago now) and have been well since, returning to work and normal activities. There were some amazing staff members at Callington Road, but others didn't seem to understand mental health problems (some lovely young people, however with little life experience). Potentially they would benefit from going on a training course where people with lived experience talked about their recovery journeys. In addition, a lot of the doctors making key decisions were still in training, which seems to me a major issue (if a patient is assigned a doctor still training, there should be another doctor overseeing their case).

Thank you for your feedback regarding your experiences at Callington Road Hospital. I am sorry that you had concerns regarding your care and would like to thank you for bringing these matters to our attention. We always welcome any feedback as it gives us the opportunity to improve the standard of service we provide for all service users. We are sorry that your first experience of Callington Road environment left you feeling terrified and that you did not feel supported or cared for appropriately. This is not the standard of care we would expect from the inpatient services. It would be very helpful to discuss this in more detail to help us to further improve services. Please do contact us if you feel this is something you might be able to do. We are glad to hear that you are doing well and that the second admission to Callington Road was a more positive experience for you and that you valued the input from the OT staff and the activities you took part in. We will feedback your comments to the Bristol Medical Team regarding Junior Doctors as we would expect them to be supported by senior staff. We will ensure this is listed to be discussed at the next Bristol Medical Advisory Group to remind everyone of the expectation with regards to medical supervision from Senior Medical Staff. Thank you for your comments regarding the experience of staff. We are working to include service users in all improvements at Callington Road, including in supporting staff to develop. We will ensure that your thoughts about a training course are included in these discussions. Thank you once again for your feedback. Please do contact us if you would like to discuss this further, the PALS team would be happy to organise this for you and they can be contacted on 01249 468261 / 0800 0731778 or by email at awp.pals@nhs.net With best wishes Jo Collins, PALS Manager
