"Induced labour of first baby"

I was admitted to ESH in September 2014 for induction of labour at 42 weeks. The midwives on Rusper ward were lovely and caring. My only complaint is how exposed you feel on an open ward when having to undergo invasive examinations. After waiting 3 days for a bed on the delivery suite I was transferred there to have the syntocinon infusion as artificial rupture of my membranes did not get things going. This is where it all started to go downhill. The midwife who took over my care was so unfriendly and abrupt I felt like crying. Being in a vulnerable position such as this, I was hoping the midwife on delivery suite to be kind and caring. Her break came shortly after my arrival and I was able to ask the midwife covering whether she would be able to stay, which fortunately she did as she was much friendlier, warmer and encouraging. Unfortunately my labour ended in a crash emergency Caesarean section. For which I remember being transferred through a building site! Following this I was taken back to delivery suite then what felt like only a short period transferred to Burstow for my postnatal care. Burstow ward was horrendous, dated, tired and cramped. I was put in a corner bed at transfer in the middle of the night (baby being born at 1am) and left. In the morning when my husband returned, he had to ask for catheter bag to be emptied as full to bursting. This happened again later during the day. I was never offered analgesia following this major operation, even though I understand midwives undertake drug rounds, I was not offered any pain relief or asked how my pain was considering my recovery. No one from the obstetric team came to see me the following morning and explain what had happened and why and be there to answer any of my questions. Other patients were having more than the restricted 2 visitors which made the ward very loud and even more cramped. When my husband complained about this, nothing was done. In the end on day 1 following the birth I told the midwives I wanted to leave and got discharged. The care was so limited and nothing my husband couldn't do for me at home. I must say though one midwife was lovely on Burstow and the Health care assistant who helped my shower but unfortunately I don't recall her name. I was referred to Mavis Bloomfield to discuss my birth which did help with the understanding of what happened and why. This unfortunately doesn't explain the uncaring midwife I encountered and the facilities which are bordering on third world. Overall, if we ever decide to have another baby, I will be travelling a lot further to ensure I am treated in another hospital as I won't return to ESH.
