"Emergency admission via A andE on 14 .12. 14"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

I arrived at LRI by emergency ambulance on Sunday evening having had severe D and V and feeling v ill. I was transferred by ambulance from Loughborough walk in centre, which, despite being told was an emergency, took well over two hrs. The unit was heaving and initially the ambulance was backed up into the outside entrance - not great when you're feeing so I'll. Once inside a cubicle the care was very good- considering the whole place was packed, staff were calm and competent and began treatment and obs fairly quickly. I was moved to majors at some point and remained there till about 0900 the fooling morning at which point I was transferred to ward 15. I did find it a v scary process esp when we weren't able to get in the door on the stretcher but this is not the fault of the staff , but to me shows an inadequate funding for the hospital by DoH. There seemed to be a good number of patients who, as I was wheeled though to majors, were laughing and joking , and you have to question the reasons why some people attend the dept- I could not stand up yet alone laugh and it is frustrating that people still don't get the ethos of what A& E is for. The staff who cared for me were great- polite, caring and never made me feel a nuisance even though they were under great pressures and never stopped all night. Once on ward 15 ,I was put in a side room. By large the staff in the ward were also excellent, my only concerns were that a nurse( I think agency ) on the ward seemed to struggle with the fact I am gay, asked me several times the name of my partner and kept referring to her as' Mr ', not acceptable when same sex marriage is legal and discrimination is illegal. This same nurse also took it upon herself to go though my bag, looking for meds, when I had not given her permission to do so. The other staff were helpful, kind, and supportive again, despite being under great pressure of work that was relentless. I have never felt so ill and the process was scary but he great team have got me sorted and I'm now recovering at home- please convey my tanks to the team at A&e and ward15. Government need to understand the pressures you are all under and do something fast as the Nhs is something we should be proud of and not take fur granted

Dear Maggie, Thank you for sharing your experience with us, sorry to hear you were feeling so ill. We hope you feel better now, just in time for Christmas :-) We cannot comment on the waiting time for the ambulance, but are very sorry it took so long when you were in pain and worried. If you would like to follow this up, please contact EMAS http://www.emas.nhs.uk/contact/ We have however, passed your very kind words onto the A&E team and ward 15, this will really help to boost morale during a busy time for the department. With regards to the individual staff member mentioned, this is not acceptable behaviour and we would like the opportunity to follow this up for you. We ask that please you send further fetails to Matron, Julie at julie.burdett@uhl-tr.nhs.uk or by calling 0116 258 6148. If this member of staff was indeed Agency, Julie will liaise with our staff bank manager to resolve. Best of health for 2015, Communications Team Leicester's Hospitals
