"We always thought my Mums treatment couldn't get..."

About: Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital

We always thought my Mums treatment couldn't get worse but it seemed to! Through bowel screening results in January 2013 my Mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Even the first consultations were long and drawn out and eventually in May 2013 she had major bowel surgery. She wasn't given any follow up appointment with her consultant and during the eight weeks I constantly pointed out to the colectoral nurses that something wasn't right, but no nothing was done ...until after eight weeks of hell and my mum becoming very ill, I made a phone call and said if the colectoral nurse didn't get something sorted for my mum we would all need psychiatric help. That afternoon she visited and her very words were I wish I had done something about this sooner! The following day my mum finally saw her consultant post op who diagnosed an infection. Mum was given antibiotics for three months but most importantly missed her window for chemo that she so needed due to being so ill. The op was corrected in November because things weren't improving. Around this time Mum had abnormal blood test results showing problems with the liver and after seeing and discussing this with a haematologist she was told after what my mum had been through it was surprising but no further investigations were made. These abnormal blood tests continued and it was only after us writing and insisting some further investigations should be carried out that they were (all within a space of a week would you believe) only for my Mum to be told the cancer had spread to her liver and lungs. Despite my mums bowel surgery scar not having healed correctly she has not heard anything from the bowel consultant that day and on leaving the room the same colectoral nurse turned to my parents and said go and enjoy yourself! My mums diagnosis was in January 2014. Her chemo finished in May. Her last contact with her oncologist must have been in June? And after contacting the care quality commission, PALS and even Downing Street who have passed our issues to the department of health to investigate further. People can not be treated in this way. My dog is treated with more care and compassion at the vets! My mum may only be a number to the hospital but to me she is the world. Please don't just leave complaints on here please notify any failings to the care quality commission who have the power to make changes. The hospital may not reply to complaints on here but at some point they are going to have to admit they are doing a pathetic job!
