"Suspected bowel cancer"

On the 29/12/08 I had an operation for removal of part of my bowel because of suspected cancer. During the operation there was damage to another organ which resulted in the need for a drain from my pelvis (full of fluid) and a nephrostomy. Also my arms and legs were extremely swollen due to excess fluid having had bout 8 or 9 saline drips which caused more swelling each time another drip was inserted. I was eventually discharged in February 2009 with the nephrostomy still in place having been told that I would need another operation to insert a stent to repair the damage. This was done on 06/04/09. After the first operation I was in ward B4 and the nursing staff, tea ladies, cleaning ladies and the porters were extremely kind, helpful and caring. I was able to eat and found the food to be good. The best bits as mentioned above were the nursing care. The beds were changed completely everyday. The worst bits were the lack of immediate information as to what went wrong and why as I still don’t know the full details. The section of the bowel which has removed turned out to be pre-cancerous so no chemotherapy was necessary. I am well again now and once more able to take care of myself as I did before the operation. But the first few weeks were quite a frightening experience.
