"Perseverance, compassionate care and courage."

About: Surrey And Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust / Early intervention

(as a student nurse),

I visited a client in his home with my mentor. This client is new to mental health service and he was referred to Early intervention in Psychosis by his GP. This was our third visit. Unfortunately, the parents were at home during that visit. At one point the clients told us to leave the house and he does not think he needs us. He left us and went to his room. My mentor demonstrated highest level of courage, perseverance and compassion. My mentor approached the client in his room, spoke professionally to him and offered him the care plan which we were going to discuss with him. My mentor did not give up so easily on the client. After a while the client came out after his parents had left the lounge where we were waiting and handed over the care plan to my mentor. I was very scared to stay in the house but through my mentor's professionalism, courage, perseverance and the show of compassion things turned out very positively. The client is now phoning us to book appointment so we can see him instead of us phoning him for appointment. Even though there are still few issues the client has not agreed to, my mentor is patiently working with him to bring him where he needs to be.
