"I found blood and other bodily fluids"

About: Rotherham Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I initially went into A&E at Rotherham with abdominal pain. Whilst there, the doctors and nurses treated me with dignity and respect. This continued onto the clinical decision unit where the surgical registrar and nurses were very friendly. Once I was moved onto the holding ward, and later onto ward B4, I was more or less left to my own devices. My stats were very rarely done. I was unable to eat for four days and found it difficult to keep fluids down but this was largely ignored despite me asking to go on to a drip so that I didn’t get too dehydrated. The level of cleanliness was very low. Several times I wanted to use the toilet facilities only to find diarrhoea on the floors, all over the toilet and even on the walls behind the waste bins. On other occasions I found blood and other bodily fluids. Being unable to hover, I was forced to leave the ward to use the public toilets. The shower room was usually in a similar state. From my bed I could see plenty of rubbish on the floor including protective needle caps that were there for several days. At one point I dropped my mobile on the floor and it came back up covered in dust. It was only after some one from PALS came and did an inspection (following a compliant I presume) was the ward thoroughly cleaned.
