"Left waiting for results in Nottingam A&E"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Accident and emergency

(as a carer),

My daughter was ill and was taken by her grandparent to the emergency GP service. They thought that she could have meningitis so arranged to take her in the emergency GP service ambulance.

She was taken to A&E and received excellent care. She was monitored straight away. A female doctor looked after her and arranged for lots of blood tests to be taken. My daughter felt safe and secure. I came to the hospital as soon as I could.

My daughter is scared of needles so when they took the blood tests etc. she was very nervous but the staff were great. They said that it was not likely to be meningitis but would wait for test results.

At about 6pm, the female doctor who had been caring for my daughter now went off shift. By 10pm no one had been to see my daughter and I went to see what was happening. No results from the tests had been given to us, and then they told me they had lost the test results and samples and that it would have to be done again. My daughter was feeling so unwell, had a high temperature of 39 degrees, a sore throat. She also had to go through all those tests again when she hated needles.

I felt that once the female doctor had gone home at 6pm that my daughter had been forgotten and neglected. They promised this time to personally take the blood samples down to be tested and that we should have the results soon.

At 12.30m there were still no results, I got very angry and worried and eventually another doctor came and apologised for the way we had been treated. Eventually the results came and showed that she had a severe chest and throat infection and that she had had a severe reaction to something they gave her in the antibiotics. I know that hospital staff are very busy and that they work hard, but my daughter should not have been left all those hours with no one checking up on her.
