"My odyssey continued..."

About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital / Cardiology

(as the patient),

Following on from my last story: At the outpatient consultation, the doctor had a number of students present but failed to introduce them or ask if I minded. He was then unable to answer many of my questions and proceeded to dictate the (his) "best" course of action and hurry me out of the appointment. I told him that I wanted to be seen at another hospital, for a further opinion and treatment. He immediately discharged me, saying I would need a new referral from my GP. I cannot believe his arrogance and rudeness! I have since obtained my medical records; via the Access to Information Act. These show just how disorganised and confused the hospital was reaching a timely and accurate diagnosis, when my condition did not quite fit an "off the shelf" pattern. My records also comment about me personally, describing my behaviour as "bizarre" because I wanted another opinion. I feel that this is inappropriate, unprofessional and was very upsetting. What really alarms me is that when I went for help with this situation, they assumed I was complaining. I wasn't. All I wanted was good modern care, kindness and help; as promised by the Department of Health but I received very little on the word! The consultant's letter to my GP (actually written by a registrar who did not see me) contains several factual inaccuracies and omissions. It took so long to send that I got a copy via the Access to Information Act - before my GP received it. I wonder how long it will take the final discharge letter to be sent! Naturally, I hope to be seeing a more enlightened consultant at another hospital! Perhaps the hospital could organise some staff training about the new NHS Constitution. Communication skills training for consultants might be a good idea too!
