"No crutches"

My son, student at the University, attended A&E on 20 Nov 2014. Seen quickly due to his pre-existinting conditions following a knee injury. His knee was very swollen, painful and difficult to weight bear. Told he had bleed into the knee bursa. The department appeared almost empty of patients. Following diagnosis he was told to apply ice and take pain relief and left the hospital. He more or less dragged and hopped his way out the A&E, no offer of pain relief or crutches. It was assumed he knew what take pain relief meant or is. The next day his leg has seized up and has no confidence to go back. Following my advice told him to go back to his home town and be seen there.

I sincerely apologise that your son felt he did not receive the standard of care or advice necessary. With regards to the use of crutches, the department does not routinely provide crutches as the benefits of them can be variable. However, he should have been given pain relief and advised regarding ongoing relief for his pain. I hope that the problem has now resolved but, if not, we will gladly review him at any time.
