"The ward appeared to be in chaos"

About: Heartlands Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a parent/guardian),

My mother was admitted to Ward 29 with a stroke and query sudden onset dementia. The ward seemed an absolute shambles. A lot of the staff I met seemed disorganised and I found some of them to be almost uneducated and rather rude. It appeared that patients are put onto that ward and seemingly left to rot. From what I saw there seemed to be an absence of compassion and the ward appeared to be in chaos.

My sister took a photograph of the apparent chaos as we felt it represented a health and safety issue. We were shouted at by staff saying that we couldn't do that and some of the staff were laughing and said that the ward would be in the News of the World next week and I felt they were laughing at us. In my opinion this was a disgusting comment - although there is no longer a News of the World.

I feel so sorry for any patient admitted to this ward. They are usually very vulnerable patients on this ward and unable to stand up for themselves.

In my opinion, Ward 29, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Not all of the staff were bad but the majority were rude.

Dear Sandy

Thank you for your post bringing to our attention the issues above regarding Ward 29 at Heartlands Hospital.

I am very concerned to read the details you describe regarding the environment on the ward on which your mother has been admitted.

Our Chief Nurse is aware of the concerns you have detailed and it is currently being investigated. Please contact either The Chief Nurse's office or myself at Patient Services on 0121 424 0808 so that you may be kept informed.

Kind Regards

Marie Helebert
