"Delayed and cancelled operations"

About: Hurstwood Park Centre / Neurosurgery

(as the patient),

I have a rare bone condition which causes a lot of problems. Currently I am experiencing severe pain in my lower back, both arms, hands, wrists, neck and shoulders.

I saw the consultant in June 2014 and it was agreed the consultant would operate on my neck to relieve the problems there. The consultant also said that they would not operate on my back due to the amount of scar tissue from previous operations. I had the preoperative assessment in July. Since then I have had to fight to get a date for the operation. I thought I had been successful when I was given early November as the date. However, this was cancelled. I was then given late November and this was cancelled the day before it was due to happen. In both cases emergencies were given as the reason why. Fair enough, I accept that.

I was then told that my operation would not now be until after Christmas as the surgeon was going on leave and then study leave. I was also told that some of the patients had been moved to other surgeons in order to get their operations but not me.

I have gone to great lengths to explain to my consultant that not only am I in considerable pain, unable to sleep, suffer falls and have difficulty holding things due to the pain but I have to self catheterise due to the back pain.

When my hands are bad I cannot hold the catheter and have to rely on my wife. When she is at work I have to limit my fluid intake in case I cannot hold the catheter.

All of this has made my life a miserable existence. It seems incredible that having waited 5 painful months for an operation I should be told to wait another 2 months.

I feel like you email these people and you are lucky if they reply.

Can anyone please help?
