"Where's the dignity"

About: University Hospital (Coventry)

I visited the x ray dept for an ultrasound . As soon as I hit the reception area , directly opposite the seating area were a number of patients lying on beds for all to see in bays . Most were elderly , some looked extremely unwell and uncomfortable . I assume they were in patient awaiting imaging . My point is it was very un-dignified and as there were curtains around the bays I fail to understand why they don't use them . Apart from the usual car parking nightmare , I was very surprised that once at the dept the service was very efficient . I was seen in time and was actually at the hospital for less than one hour . The only concern I have regarding my scan us that I am not convinced it was thorough enough and actually covered the problem area . ( I have had to have this scan previously and the sonographer actually scanned the affected area where as this time they went no where near ) in which case , would render the scan pointless and both a waste if mine and the hospitals time . I will check with my very good consultant next week .

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience in the Radiology department at University Hospital, Coventry in November 2014. Despite concerns around some areas of your visit, I’m pleased to hear the department was efficient and saw you on time. I apologise if you felt some of our patients were treated without dignity, this is never our intention and the utmost is always done to ensure our patients do not feel the same. I have spoken to the Modern Matron for the Radiology Department who has informed me that the curtains are available should the patient wish to have them closed however they are not routinely closed as staff would not be able to see patients and it can be isolating for patients to be shut behind a curtain. The area is staffed on a daily basis to ensure patients are comfortable and get all the help they need whilst they are waiting to be seen. We do try and ensure patients are treated with dignity and given the privacy they require. Please also be aware that sonography techniques may vary. However I am positive the experienced team at University Hospital have scanned you in the correct areas ahead of you consultant appointment.
